I am at least a month away from when I can start building my tiny, and several months beyond that before I start living in it, but I am nonetheless very excited to get started. I have been working on some small woodworking and fabrication projects (I’ll post about building my front door sometime soon), but I still find myself sitting around and looking for new problems to tackle.
And since spring is coming (hopefully sooner rather than later!), it seems like an appropriate time to start downsizing my belongings.
I would like to take the time to mention that out of all the aspects and struggles that come with living tiny, staying organized has always been my number one concern. Even more than the whole ‘building a house on wheels’ thing, I am mostly concerned about my tiny becoming a hoarder’s nightmare.
I have always been a mess.
The way I see it, I have a few different problems:
- I have too many things
- I don’t have a place for all the things I own
- I keep things longer than I should
- I have things I don’t need
Two of those problems have relatively easy solutions, and two of them don’t.
I have a lot of clothing that I am well aware that I don’t wear, and no place for it to go. I have a lot of books and papers and such I don’t use or need, but keep anyway. I have a lot of items of no real value, but they seem to hang around nonetheless. And most importantly, I have a lot of things that just don’t belong in my room; tools, rope, some of my camping equipment, and more.
The process of downsizing for me is going to be in two parts, then.
First, I need to figure out what things I need and what things I don’t. I will catalog and organize my belongs to better visualize what will need to come with me into the tiny house.
Second, I will need to figure out a more efficient way to organize my belongings, because what I have now (obviously) isn’t working.
I have seen a lot of resources and articles and blog posts about how to downsize belongings. Different things work for different people. I’ve made a list below of some resources I found helpful when planning out my downsizing adventure.
- Lessons in Impermanence (TinyHouseTalk)
- Ideas for Downsizing (The Noshery)
- Downsizing by room/category (Tiny House Blog)
- How to Declutter your Wardrobe (TinyHouseTalk)
Winter break starts in a few days so I will have time during the week to start de-cluttering.
My major motivation to write this blog post was so that there was a public record that was actually going to start getting rid of stuff. I have tried in the past to little or no avail, but I think I can handle actually getting rid of a good chunk of stuff this time around.
It won’t be quick, it won’t be easy, but I look forward to getting it done.
